(tutorial)

i just did a cool thing that i think would be useful if you’re like me and sometimes have a hard time picking colours / a colour scheme for an image

basically i just took a brush with moderate spacing, turned on colour dynamics and set all the hue/sat/brightness to a low (~10%-30%) jitter, picked a base colour, and drew a line down the side of the canvas

it’s sort of like when some people save colour swatches so they can keep their shading consistent, but more for playing around with different tones and lighting on a single surface. it’ll probably be pretty good for skin which is very multi-tonal by nature.

a lot of colours came out that i probably wouldn’t have picked manually, but they still looked pretty cool. and it saves a lot of time because now i have a broad range of colours without having to browse through my pantone swatches or open up the colour picker.

kelseyum asked you: On the topic of help posts, do you have any tips for drawing the head in profile? It’s something I struggle with pretty consistently; for some reason I just can’t understand it. Anything you could say on the subject would be extremely helpful for me! (sorry if this sends twice; tumblr is being super weird!)
Ok, I hope this is helpful! It helps to have a vague guideline/set of rules in mind, and this is what I generally thing of. When you’re drawing the skull in profile, you can basically draw it in a box and then divide it into four quadrants. The ear is located right in the middle; you can find other things from there. The eye generally lines up with the top of the ear, the nose usually comes from the middle of the eyes/pupil and goes down to about halfway through the quadrant it’s in. The edge of the jaw lines up with the ear. Obviously that’s a super rough guideline, but it can really help you out!
The biggest thing I think people have problems with is making sure you draw enough skull onto the back of the head. That’s why drawing a square helps - if you’re too far from the edge of the square, you don’t have enough skull for a brain, haha.
Once you have that in mind, you can build upon it! Not everyone will fall right into this pattern; some people might have really big ears or ears that are higher/lower, some people have big foreheads, some people have big noses. If you’re really stuck, Google some profiles and try and draw them with these guidelines; it’ll help you figure out what goes where!
*A* Hope that helps a bit!

very quick minimalist poster tutorial:

pscs5:

  • file > new image: set to 500 x 600 (or whatever you wish! although this looks a nice neat size)
  • you need some sort of nice looking background. paper/card/texture and stock in general work great for this. some of my favourite ones to use are here and this pack and if you don’t like them google is your best friend! if you can’t get one with a certain effect overlay a few (as seen above) and toggle with the opacity.

  • then fill a layer or layers with colour to shade it how you want to. here i’m using a red set on color, opacity: 57% and the blue set on color burn: 66%. i do this just to toggle with the colours more easily to get the effect i want but remember if you have one below it’s going to alter the colour on top (blue+red=purply etc.)
  • sometimes i’ll even put a psd over it to give it a certain effect i want.
  • any inconsistencies later on this background colour is me fiddling with it to get it how i want. just remember KEEP IT FAIRLY DARK you want to be able to see your image.

  • go into google, search for what image you want.
  • paste into your image in a new layer.
  • erase your background. if the image is clear on a white background or a blackbackground you can skip erasing!

  • once that’s done resize your image how you’d like it
  • image > adjustments > black and white

  • image set to lighten. toggle with brightness/contrast to get it to show clearly (image > adjustments > brightness contrast)
  • you want the image to be mainly white, if it’s not invert it (image > adjustments > invert). most images need inverting.
  • if the image isn’t clear enough duplicate the layer of your image, invert it and then toggle with opacity: this usually only has to me done in detailed images such as here and (as seen below)

  • then add a text layer. if you’re doing a set it’s best to use the same on all of them.
  • toggle with any colours/settings/sizes you’re still not happy with. rearrange it all to center ish and you’re done!

Tumblr Tips

Here are some useful extensions, scripts, and tutorials for Tumblr. Scripts require a simple, one click install for Google Chrome. Firefox users may need to download Greasemonkey first before installing scripts.

As far as I know, these scripts/extensions can work together.

I’ll add more links as I think of them, and feel free to share your own tips or resources. Please note that I didn’t make any of these resources, nor do I personally use all of them, so while I’m happy to answer simple questions, it’s probably best to ask the actual creator of the extension/tutorial/tool/etc.

Popular:

  • Missing E - Probably the most popular Tumblr extension. Features: one click reblog/queue/drafts, automatically clears all tags when reblogging, adds tags to ask/reply, allows one click reply to comments (hold down the shift key to reply to multiple comments), shuffle queue, adds timestamp to posts on your dashboard, replaces text (reblog, notes) with picture icons, and more. Downside: Tumblr apparently hates Missing E, and will try to scare you into disabling it.
  • Xkit - Similar to Missing E. Some additional features: Unfollower check (how to install), shorten long posts on dashboard, highlight or blacklist key terms in posts, download mp3 from audio posts.
  • Tumblr Savior - Blacklist tags that you do not want to see on your dashboard. Downside: Not everyone tags.

  • Hi guys! I have another tutorial for you. This one is slightly harder and requires a bit of patience. This was requested by a few different people, so I hope you like it.
  • I’ll be showing you how to make a cap like the above (With negative space/texture use). I’m using Photoshop CS5. There are a lot of different ways to get the same effect when you’re trying to make a cap like this. I use a lot of textures and gradient maps. It’s a bit hard to explain but I’m going to try my best.
  • (I apologize in advance for switching persons so many times in this tutorial. I went back and re-read it and I switched like 28290 times. Sorry about that!)
  • First of all, I’m using this cap. If you want, you can follow along using the cap, or use one of your own. It’s up to you.
  • Step one:
  • Copy and paste your image into photoshop. It’s originally quite large, so I’m going to re-size mine to 500px width.
  • Now I’m going to sharpen the image. Go to filter > sharpen > smart sharpen and use these settings (or whichever suits your cap):

  • Step two:
  • We’re going to erase the background. If you’re not familiar with how to erase part of the background, I can help you with that. For this cap, there’s already so much negative space so we only have to erase a part.
  • Create a new layer. Use your eyedrop tool to find a color of the background that you can erase over the object with.
  • Make your brush about 70px (or smaller, if you prefer to go slow) and make the hardness about 20%.  Start erasing the object in the background, but don’t get too close to her arm.

  • Don’t worry too much if the color doesn’t completely match. Once we start using graidents and textures it shouldn’t matter.
  • Now reduce the size of your brush, change the hardness to about 90% and cover the part by her arm. You may want to enlarge the cap to about 200% to see a bit better.
  • If you’re not satisfied with your covering, you can erase and try again (because we created a new layer, see?). If this is your first time doing this it might take a few tries. I’m satisfied with mine, so I merged the covering layer  (layer 2) down onto the main background (layer 1).
  • Step three:
  • Now it’s time to add coloring!
  • I’m using one of Nikoo’s psds, edited to fit my needs. You can make your own coloring, or use a PSD. I find my PSD’s on the “psd” tag on tumblr, when I use them.
  • Above the PSD, I used this texture set to lighten. Really any light grainy texture will do. For those, I recommend checking northerndawn’s textures. Here’s what it looks like right now:

  • Here’s how the layers look:

  • Step Four:
  • Now, time for gradients. This part might get a bit tricky. The first gradient I’m going to use is the orange one from this psd. Set it to pin light.

  • I know the color looks a bit weird, but don’t worry! It’ll look better once we’re done.
  • Now, the second gradient. Make sure it’s above the gradient we just added. I don’t remember where I got this gradient, but it looks like this:

  • You can find gradient map packs on tumblr by looking through this tag. I probably got this gradient from one of the packs under that tag. I’m sorry I can’t tell you exactly what it is!
  • Step five:
  • I’m going to add some more textures. The first one is this texture, set to screen. Make sure it’s above the gradient maps.

  • Step six:
  • Another texture. I told you there were going to be a lot of textures! I’m using this texture, set to color burn at 79% opacity. Place them under the gradients. If you don’t place it under the gradient it doesn’t look right.

  • Like I said, there are a lot of different ways to do this. I don’t do it like this every time: Most of the time, I just screw around with textures and gradients until I find something I like. If you aren’t getting the result you want, keep messing around with it. You’ll get it eventually, maybe even by accident!
  • Now, I’m going to use the same texture, set to hue at 100% opacity. This one has to be above all of the other layers, or it won’t look right. If you don’t like how this color looks, you can use another gradient map or just don’t worry about it. I don’t know if you can get the same end result as me, though.

  • Step seven:
  • Place this texture under your coloring. It should be the texture right above your actual cap. I set it to overlay at 90% opacity. I know her face looks really dark, but we’re going to erase that.

  • Step eight:
  • Take your eraser, set it to about 30% opacity and erase some of the darkness around her face.

  • Step nine:
  • I placed this texture (one of my favorite textures!) above all the layers, and set it to lighten 20%. It doesn’t make that much difference, but it brightens certain spots.  We’re trying to build up layers of effects so it looks grainy and a bit old.

  • Step ten:
  • Create a new layer above all your previos layers. Set your brush to white, about 70px, with 10% hardness. Create white dots all over your new layer.

  • Now set the layer to overlay at 30% opacity. This gives our cap a bit more brightness. If its too much for your cap, you can skip this step or reduce the opacity.

  • Step eleven:
  • Go to layer > new adjustment layer > brightness/contrast and use these settings:
  • And, we’re done! This is my final product:

I hope this tutorial could help you! If you’tr stuck on a step, or just need help, please don’t hesitate to ask meabout it. I’ll help you as best as I can. Please let me know your end result, I want to see!

Hey guys! Sorry its been so inactive around here. I’m slowly but surely getting finished with my finals.
Anyway, I found this and thought I had to share. The way body language can tell how a person is really feeling is something that I consider very interesting. I think it would be a great way to show, in a subtle way, how a character is really feeing.
Hope its useful! And good luck with finals! Hopefully, this place will be a bit more active once summer kicks in.
